Fighting Global Warming

The continuously melting of Arctic ice have confirmed our worst fears as human beings, which means that the world is inevitably heading to an end with global warming looming at large. There is no better time to start taking things into our own hands as any more delay in actions can lead to uncontrollable temperature increases, the higher we go the more difficult it would to bring it back down. Thus as we are moving and inching closer towards our numbered days on earth, producing a solution that will both satisfy our short term problems and long term problems are a top priority for many countries.

One of the most obvious fact about fighting the global warming is by planting more trees, it has been estimated that up to six billion or more trees should be planted in order for us to truly stand a chance against this meltdown, not to mention that we need to stop land clearing and cutting trees indiscriminately. This is indeed a mammoth effort that we simply can not do in such a short period of time.

The main reason why planting six billion trees will help with our cause is because trees converts our carbon emission to the atmosphere into oxygen, and as such having that much tree will no doubt lower our emission and bring a halt to our greenhouse problems.

One example of how urgent we are for solution has been displayed in the events where excessive tress clearing have led to a disappearance of a whole forest in Bangladesh and the Easter Island.

That aside, there might also be other side effects of land clearing which remained unknown to us just yet, and it might be too late once we find out. Therefore it is our responsibilities to make things happen as part of our duty as a citizen of earth.

One way to stop global warming is to simply stop consuming or producing harmful byproducts which emits carbon emission to our atmosphere. Choose to use biodegradable minerals and stopping our wastage on various harmful fuels and energy can be a start. While all those seemed small compared to six billion trees, it is needed because the sooner we can stop polluting and killing the environment, the sooner the healing process can begin.

Green Energy – Alternatives To Fossil Fuels

Today we live in a world where fossil fuels (oil, natural gas and coal) provide more than 90% of the total energy. The energy needs are increasing and it is estimated that fossil fuels will be depleted in not so distant future. The need to look for alternative sources of energy is therefore a priority.

There are two main reasons – energy supply problems and environmental problems. As we know, fossil fuels are in limited supply. They are non-renewable and will eventually be depleted. They were formed millions of years ago from dead plants and animals and cannot be replenished. When they run out, they run out. By some estimates, they will be depleted by 2050.

One of the biggest problems with fossil fuels is pollution. Coal fueled power plants are the largest source of air pollution in the U.S. Burning fossil fuels produces many pollutants – carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and many other harmful compounds. This causes many health and environmental problems – acid rain, smog, ozone hole, and global climate change just to name a few.

So what can we do? The future is definitely not in fossil fuels, we know that. It belongs to renewable energy. Solar power, wind power and hydro power are the leading renewable energy technologies of today.

Our overly dependence on fossil fuels is not a good thing and we should start making serious efforts to decrease it. Being dependant on something that will soon run out, is not very healthy.

One of the biggest reasons why renewable energy is not used more often is the cost. But this is positively changing. The technology is improving and the costs for solar, wind, and other renewable sources are going down.

Alternative energy sources are definitely the way of the future. But how smooth will the transition from fossil fuels be? That’s up to us and is certainly something to consider sooner rather than later.

Individuals can start using renewable energy today and greatly reduce or even eliminate their power bill. Learn how to make your own electricity and see Earth 4 Energy guide. It’s easier and cheaper than you think.
