Producing silicon ribbon is slightly cheaper than producing PV cells, and production costs reflect the difference.

Amorphous silicon panels are not created with crystalline silicon at all. In fact, an amorphous silicon panel is composed of just a piece of semi conductive metal with a thin silicon film over the top. This panel is attached to metal pieces. These solar panels only have an electricity return rate of 5% to 6%. While these panels are very cheap to produce, they are not particularly efficient.
