Solar Panels Can Be Renewable Energy Source
The world’s population of humans relies on energy to run everything. From professional uses to recreation, from practical to leisurely, everything humans do relies on energy somewhere in the cycle. Typically fossil fuels have been used to provide this energy, but they are running low. Solar panels offer a newer option for providing energy to the world.
Fossil fuels are made up of hydro-carbon rich resources such as organic materials buried beneath the earth. These organic materials are burned and used to generate steam, which turns a turbine engine. These engines create the world’s energy resources. Unfortunately, fossil fuel as an energy source is messy and creates pollution.
Solar panels, on the other hand, use a renewable source of energy, namely the sun. The life of a sun is quite long compared to human lifespans. The sun will be around for a very long time, providing the same kind of energy possibilities in the future as it could provide now. Solar panels use this energy to create electricity, much the same as fossil fuels and other energy sources.
Photovoltaic cells, more commonly known as solar cells, are the part of a solar panel that work to change light energy into electricity. Solar panels are made up of many photovoltaic cells. Each actively turns the energy it captures into something people can use.
Within the density of the gas of the sun, there are thermonuclear explosions going on constantly. Hydrogen atoms fuse with helium atoms, and the explosions that result give off radiation. This radiation streams toward the earth and is caught up by the photovoltaic cells of a solar panel. A panel at the equator of the earth, measuring one fifth of a meter, will turn the sun’s energy into two amps of two volt electrical power. Solar cells that are on space craft above the earth’s atmosphere are even more effective at capturing energy.
Some solar panels are made from crystalline silicon, while others are made using amorphous silicon technology. The amorphous style of solar paneling is thinner and more efficient than the crystalline kind. Some high efficiency solar cells are constructed using gallium arsenide. However, the expensive process of making them, called molecular beam epitaxy, is not ideal for every day use cells.
Besides using silicon, it’s also possible to make solar panels with plastic. With this sort of technology, it would be possible to have solar cells layered over the screen of, say, a laptop computer. This would provide a constant source of power where it is needed. However, plastic solar cells aren’t prepared yet to gather up more than eleven percent of energy that their silicon counterparts gather.
The world’s trend in energy is slowly changing. People are seeking out new forms of creating energy, especially from renewable sources. Because so much of what humanity relies on is derived or a part of the energy cycle, finding energy that is clean and efficient is very important. Enough light strikes the earth every day to provide for the world’s energy needs for a year. Solar panels are a way of capturing this energy, cleanly, without a harsh impact on the environment.
